Paul Hewitt Music has been putting pianos in front of Monroe players since 1946, and the floor still works the same simple way it always has: everything out here is meant to be sat down at and tried, not looked at from behind a rope. On the new side, we're a Yamaha dealer, so what you're playing is current production, straight off the line, with a consistent action from one instrument to the next. Beside it sits the pre-owned floor, which is where most of the personality lives. Over the years that floor has carried Wurlitzer consoles, Young Chang baby grands, rebuilt Everett studios, and whatever else has come in on trade or through an estate. None of it is a fixed catalogue. A finish that's here in September might be sold by October, and something else will have taken its spot by the time you visit. Why sitting down at it is the whole point
Piano people throw around words that don't mean much until you've stood next to the instruments they describe. A console is the shortest upright, built to sit flush against a wall in a den or a starter home, and it's usually where a first-time player begins. A studio upright stands taller, with a longer soundboard and more sustain, and it's the size a lot of working teachers keep for themselves. Above those sit the grands, measured by length rather than height: a baby grand is the shortest of the family, a concert grand the longest most houses will never need. None of this is a ranking. A well-kept console in a small room can sound better than a neglected grand in a big one, and the honest answer to which one is right for you has more to do with your room, your ceiling, and how late you're allowed to practice than with prestige. That's exactly why we'd rather have you sit down and play three or four of them back to back than describe them to you over the phone.

Pre-owned, from the rest of the floor
Everything else has already lived somewhere before it landed at Lamy Lane, a trade-in, an estate, a family upright that finally found a new home. Condition varies instrument to instrument in a way a new piano simply doesn't, which is exactly why we'd rather you play it than take our word for it. When one of these finally reaches the end of its playing life, it doesn't always leave the building. Some become rebuilt cabinets and furniture instead.
